Today marks 57 Years since the attack on the Lubiri in 1966.
Obote’s militia attacked and assaulted Kabaka Muteesa II’s Mengo palace, with the intention of killing the Kabaka in 1966.
It should be recalled that Milton Obote’s militia attacked and seized the palace on 24th May, 1966, with the intention to kill the Kabaka. The attack led to a period of political turmoil. Kabaka Muteesa II, went into exile the United Kingdom, where he later died in 1969.
There was a special service organized at St. John’s Cathedral, Namungoona, led by Archbishop Jeronymos Muzeey, of the Orthodox Church. The Kingdom was represented the Speaker, of the Great Lukiiko, Oweek. Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule who delivered Katikkiro’s message.
The Katikkiro noted that the attack on the Palace caused social disintegration, where freedom and happiness was lost in Buganda and people’s trust in Uganda shrunk.
