Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation. The Buganda kingdom established BUCADEF in 1994 as a Non-Governmental Organisation (No. S5914/1 432), non political legitimate body corporate particularly charged with spearheading and directing social economic development in communities. It was established to achieve sustainable improvement in the living standards and welfare of the people, in addition building capacities of communities in order to render effective services to cause sustainable development.

BUCADEF has developed various programmes which have been defined and paraded within the overall framework of existing government macro-economic policies and programmes that include;
  • Economic programmes designed to create and expand income earning opportunities, specifically sustainable agriculture and enterprise development, investment and commercial undertakings.
  • Social sector programmes designed to promote community development, food sufficiency, health and education services, water and sanitation and communal infrastructure
  • Social assistance programmes intended to assist disadvantaged social groups.
  • Production support programmes that support the implementation of the above economic, social and social assistance programmes.
  • It is against this background that BUCADEF orients itself to spearhead and direct general community development emphasizing the promotion of standards of living particularly of the rural community and the urban poor in the central region.

Beneficiaries
The primary beneficiaries are the people in the central region with special emphasis on rural and urban poor communities, women, youth and the disadvantaged.
Areas of Operation.
The organization has in the previous years covered the following sub-counties: Mubende, Mpigi, Wakiso, Mukono, Kiboga, Luwero, Mityana,Kayunga, Masaka, Gomba, Buikwe, Kyankwanzi, Butambala
Projects implemented to date.
1 .Food security and poverty alleviation project (FOSENPAP)
The project aimed at integrating food security, nutrition and income generation among the most vulnerable communities especially those living with AIDS. It was funded by ACDI/VOCA.

2. Integrated Community Managed Water Hygiene and Sanitation Project
The project ensured that the majority of the people get access to safe and clean water as well as proper hygiene and sanitation. The project was funded by Water Aid whereby over 80 water sources constructed targeting 25,000 people in Kasanje Sub County.

3. Micro Credit
This project aimed at reducing poverty by increasing people's access (especially women) to micro credit services. Beneficiaries were trained in record keeping, credit management and provided with entrepreneur skills. Short term loans were provided to a number of small and micro ent

4 . Project for Enhancement of Women in Agro Business
The project aimed at improving women's livelihood through increased production by encouraging and facilitating the establishment of women operated agro-inputs supply shops and increased buying and selling of agricultural produce. The project was funded by a grant from McKnight Foundation of the USA. It mainly targeted Mityana, Mubende and Kiboga Districts and reached out to about 160 women in 30 sub counties.
5. Model Home (Nsindika Njake) Project
This is a project implemented in partnership by three organisations namely BUCADEF, Quality Chemicals and Central Broadcasting Services (CBS) ltd. The overall goal of this project is to fight poverty among the people of Buganda through providing hybrid in-calf heifers, high value goats, chicks, improved seeds and mosquito nets to different households or organized farmer groups.
6. UPHOLD Project
The main aim of the project is to assist Ugandans to achieve improved health, longer and more productive lives, through interventions in three integrated social sectors; Education, Health and HIV/AIDS. The project was funded by UPHOLD/JSI.
7 .Kiboga District Rural Feeder Roads Rehabilitation Project:
The project aimed at rehabilitating roads which include Kajere-Kisweka -11.8km Kikonda – Lwengo -28.8km. They have been completed and shall facilitate increased local and regional market access as well as opening up remote agricultural areas. The project was funded by ACDI-VOCA.

8 .Global Fund Project
The project focused on the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria through the following interventions; Information Education and Communication (IEC)/ Behavior Change Communication (BCC) program, social marketing of condoms in rural areas, training of groups to offer psychosocial support to people living with HIV/AIDS, legal protection of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), apprenticeship and youth training of school dropouts, mitigation of the impacts of AIDs among orphans and vulnerable children. Ministry of Health has given BUCADEF a-go-ahead to restart the project.
9 . HIV/AIDS Workshop.
BUCADEF in partnership and funding from Concern organised a 5-day HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support services workshop from 30 th October to 3 rd November 2006.
10. Land and Environment Conservation Project.
This project funded by UNDP small grants programme aimed at training farmers in the best land management practices to reduce soil erosion, use of drainage channels constructed along contour lines, construction of A-bridges, proper plant spacing, cover cropping and organic manure application.
11. The Project to Enhance Rural Income through Improved Banana Husbandry (PERTIB)
The project aimed at improving food security in Wakiso and Mpigi districts among 500 households and to promote sustainable agriculture in the production of banana and boost rural people's incomes. It is funded by the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints from the USA.
12. Food Security, Income Generation, Hygiene and Sanitation Promoting Project (FIGHASP)
The project is aimed at improving food security in Wakiso District as well setting up 10 primary multiplication sites for bananas generated from tissue culture in 2 sub-counties of Kasanje and Nsangi, transfer IPM knowledge from research institutions to the farmers, supply of clean planting material and knowledge dissemination and to promote hygiene and sanitation among 250 households.

13. Cassava Project.

14. NAADS Project
BUCADEF was contacted by Bukuya Sub-county to facilitate group formation under the NAADS programme. Its approach is based on community participation, ownership and sustainability of the groups. It also caters for grass roots involvement in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
15. Radio Programme
BUCADEF has a radio programme on Central Broadcasting Service locally known as SSaagalagalamidde. This is aired on CBS FM 88.8 every Sunday from 8.00pm to 9.00pm. The programme is aimed at sensitizing, mobilizing, informing and educating listeners about the projects BUCADEF is engaged in and encouraging them to participate in the development of the programmes.
