Butikkiro is the official residence of the Katikkiro of Buganda. It was constructed from 1929 and completed in 1930 under the reign of the then Katikkiro Martin Luther Nsibirwa. The architectural plan of this building was superintended by an Indian Explorer, Aldina Visram.

Butikkiro was constructed very close to the Mengo Palace because it is ideal that the Katikkiro should be the first person to be asked about the wellbeing of the Kabaka and also responsible for welcoming the Kabaka’s visitors first.

Past Katikkiros who have used the Butikkiro include;

  1. Martin Luther Nsibirwa 1929-1941 (Kabaka Muteesa reappointed him as Katikkiro in 1945 before he was shot dead that very year)
  2. Samwiri Wamala 1941-1945
  3. Earnest Michael Kawalya Kaggwa 1945-1950
  4. Paul Nell Kavuma 1950-1955
  5. Mikayiri Kintu 1955-1964
  6. Mayanja Nkanji 1964-1966
